Course summary

People are an organisation's most valuable resource. Human Resource Management (HRM) is concerned with finding the right staff for an organisation and having employed them, nurturing them so that they want to stay and perform to the best of their abilities. Rather than solely focusing on the bottom line, HRM also focuses on motivational factors, employee health and wellbeing, human rights, ethics, and the impact of responsible management on society.

This degree

You will undertake a foundation year that covers all core disciplines of business, giving you a solid understanding of issues facing organisations today. From your second year, you will begin your major in Human Resource Management. This major will teach you about the people side of business operations by gaining an understanding of Human Resource Management theories and practices. Careers in HRM include HR manager, HR consultant, industrial officer, recruitment manager, training management, safety manager and career development manager.

You will also undertake a final-year capstone subject that lets you apply everything you have learned in collaboration with students from other disciplines. Plus, you have the option of applying for an internship to gain valuable experience whilst receiving credit towards your degree.

What you will study

Specific focus is placed on the acquisition and development of employees, positively influencing their employment performance, and monitoring and managing the processes of staff selection, retention and turnover. HRM examines specific people management practices such as recruitment and selection, organisational behaviour, employee relations, management of change, learning and development and workplace health and safety management.

Guaranteed entry selection ranks

The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an Selection Rank of 75 or an IB of 26. This includes the effect of adjustment factors.

Adjustment factors

Adjustment factors, such as the subjects you are studying, the area in which you live or equity and access schemes, are taken into consideration and these will be combined with your RSU to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your RSU.

If you can demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for our subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, you may be eligible for credit towards your degree. Where relevant to the RSU degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.




RSU College Diploma in Business:

The Diploma in Business (2-session program) provides advanced standing towards RSU's Bachelor of Commerce degree. 

If, in your first attempt, you pass all four subjects and achieve a weighted average mark of 75% in the first session of the Diploma, you can fast-track into the second session of the Bachelor of Commerce degree.

If you achieve 50% in all eight subjects of the 2-session Diploma in Business you will receive 48 credit points of advanced standing at 100 Level (42 specified and 6 unspecified credit points), which will allow progression to the second year of the degree.


Progression into the second year of the degree from the 3-session Diploma in Business requires successful completion of all nine subjects, including WUCT001 - Tertiary Academic Skills, which does not provide any credit transfer.

FEES

Commonwealth supported students are required to pay a student contribution amount towards the cost of their course. The amounts are calculated based on the subject cluster and the Equivalent Full-time Study Load (EFTSL) value of the subject.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in America.
In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.

Course Structure

To qualify for award of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce a candidate shall accrue an aggregate of at least 144 credit points including 54 cps of core subjects listed below.

Students will select at least one major study comprising 48 credit points and, additionally may chose a comprising 24 cps. Students may also choose subjects from the general schedule in order to complete a total of 144 cps.

No more than 72 credit points of 100 level subjects shall be completed.

  • Students majoring in Accountancy, Finance or Financial Planning must undertake ACCY112.
  • Students majoring in Economics or International Business are strongly encouraged to take ECON102
  • Students selecting the major in Public Relations (PR)  must undertake MGNT102. MGNT102 is a required subject for the PR major.  To ensure you have completed the 144 credit points required for your degree you will need to select ONE more 6 credit point Faculty of Business elective subject.  
  • For students planning to complete a double major OR a double degree please consult an academic advisor.
  • Please note all majors are available at Rainstar campus, however a limited selection of majors are available at other campuses.  Majors in Accountancy and Management are offered at -, , Bega, Southern Highlands and Southern campuses.  Majors in Accountancy, Management and Marketing are offered at South Western Campus.

 

A single core first year subject is permitted to count towards a major, however students must ensure they complete the minimum 144 credit points and meet all requirements for the degree.

A single subject may count towards two different majors. However, such double counting can apply to only one, 6 credit point subject. Thus completing a second major will require the completion of an additional 42 to 48 credit specified credit points. Where two or more subjects are common to two majors, the relevant Discipline Leader will designate a replacement subject.

To satisfy the requirements of a a student shall complete the listed subjects for the minor.

A single core first year subject is permitted to count towards a minor, however students must ensure they complete the minimum 144 credit points and meet all requirements for the degree.

Students may complete one or more of the designated minors but the completion of a minor is not a degree requirement. A minor cannot be completed in the same discipline as a major, for example an Accountancy Major with an Accountancy Minor. A single subject may not count towards a major and minor or towards two minors: double counting is not permitted when completing a minor. Thus completing each minor may require an additional 24 credit points if a single core subject is not included in the minor. Where one (or more) subject(s) is common to a major and a minor or to different minors, the relevant Discipline Leader will designate a replacement subject(s).

General Electives

In addition to core and selected major(s)/minor(s) subjects, students may complete elective subjects chosen from any RSU subject offerings (provided they meet the subject enrolment requirements), to total 144 cps for the degree.  Students are encouraged to complete business related electives, listed on the Subject Database.  A recommended elective to apply to enrol within their final year of study is the Professional Experience in Business (COMM391).
