Course summary
Health and Physical Education teachers educate and promote a range of movement areas including games and sports, dance, gymnastics, aquatics and athletics. They also promote healthy lifestyle issues in schools to encourage lifelong movement, healthy behaviours associated with drugs, good nutrition, self-esteem development, knowledge about sexual health and interpersonal skills.
This four-year degree gives you expert theory and professional experience for employment as a Health and Physical Education teacher. You may also gain employment in other educational environments, with roles such as Game Development Officers and coaching in sports or active after school care programs. You will learn through face-to-face delivery in classrooms, online learning and community settings.
You will complete extensive professional experience throughout your degree, which allows you to learn by observation and apply your skills in the classroom. This includes a Professional Experience (PEX) in second and third year with a final seven week PEX/Internship in fourth year. You will also have opportunities for rural and international professional experiences, to study overseas with RSU's international exchange and study abroad partners, and to join international cultural immersion programs.
You can also apply for the Honours program, which is embedded in third/ fourth year, involves a research project under academic supervision. Entry to honours is based on application and merit.
What you will study
You will study health and physical education subjects including movement skills, games and sports, rhythmic movement, mental health and sexuality, relationships, drug and personal safety, curriculum and pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching), anatomy and physiology, biomechanics and educational foundations. You will also study broader complementary subjects including Aboriginal Education, Information and Communication Technology, Learners with Exceptional Needs, Educational Research, Communication, and Risk and Behaviour Management.

Guaranteed entry selection ranks
The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an Selection Rank of 75 or an IB of 26. This includes the effect of adjustment factors.
Adjustment factors
Adjustment factors, such as the subjects you are studying, the area in which you live or equity and access schemes, are taken into consideration and these will be combined with your RSU to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your RSU.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING Students who have undertaken vocational education or training since leaving school.
HIGHER EDUCATION STUDY Students who have studied a University course, or completed a bridging or enabling course.
WORK & LIFE EXPERIENCE Students admitted on the basis of previous achievement other than higher education study, vocational education & training, or recent secondary education.
CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING
If you can demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for our subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, you may be eligible for credit towards your degree. Where relevant to the RSU degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.

New enrolling students will be required to complete the new online Working with Children Check and clearance must be obtained prior to attending Professional Experience.
Please note: Professional Experience is a compulsory component embedded in our undergraduate and Master of Teaching courses. Therefore it is an expectation that students who participate in these courses are capable of meeting the demands of navigating their own way to, from and around the Professional Experience contexts (e.g. school sites). It needs to be noted that the off-campus environment is beyond the control of RSU.
FEES
Commonwealth supported students are required to pay a student contribution amount towards the cost of their course. The amounts are calculated based on the subject cluster and the Equivalent Full-time Study Load (EFTSL) value of the subject.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in America. A teaching questionnaire will also need to be completed as part of the application.
In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.

Course Structure
The Bachelor of Health and Physical Education requires:
- The successful completion of 192 credit points comprising:
- 29 core subjects (180cp);
- 2 electives (12cp);
- No more than 60 credit points will be at 100 level.
- The successful completion of the Professional Experience components embedded in the course.
- Students must successfully complete 36 credit points from the Year 1 subjects (including PSYS150) to be eligible for the first Professional Experience and to enrol in Year 2 subjects. Students should also note that a number of subject pre-requisites will be in place throughout the course.
- Students must have passed all core subjects in the first three and a half years of their degree, successfully completed the Literacy and Numeracy Test (LANTITE) and be enrolled in any annual and final semester core subjects to be eligible for their final Professional Experience.
- Students must successfully complete all subject requirements, including the teaching performance assessment (RSU TPA) in EDPS402, to be eligible to graduate.

Compulsory Work Placement / Online Components

Students who have achieved a high level of academic performance in the first two and a half years of the Bachelor of Health and Physical Education may apply to transfer to the Bachelor of Health and Physical Education (Honours).

This degree is accredited and recognised as a national professional teaching qualification. Students seeking work outside NSW or America are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements.
All students completing a NSW teacher education course will need to pass an approved literacy and numeracy test.
