The Doctor of Education is for experienced teachers and educators seeking a professional doctoral qualification. As an aspiring educational leader, you will apply your professional practices and workplace experience to research that makes a difference to the community and to your classroom or organisation.

The Doctor of Education has three components: a research methodology subject, specialisation subjects in your particular content area, and an in-depth, supervised research project.

The specialisation subjects available include: Adult and Vocational Education, Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Information and Communication Technology in Education and Training (ICT), Literacy, Special Education, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Thesis supervision is available in a wide range of specialist areas such as teacher education, sociology of education, professional learning, KLA studies and more.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A Master of Education with credit average (65% or better), or a Bachelor degree of at least four years' duration with Honours Class II Division 2 in an appropriate area. Candidates must also have completed 3 years' relevant professional experience.

Special Admission Requirements
All applicants for research degrees must submit a written (preferably typed) proposal as part of their application. This proposal should:

  • commence with a statement detailing any previous research or project experience you have undertaken, including if possible a copy of the abstract of such work;
  • contain, in no more than one additional page, a clearly focussed research proposal for the study you would wish to undertake throughout your registration in the course; and
  • conclude with a statement of your motivation for wanting to undertake the research course.

Students are advised to make contact with a potential supervisor to discuss their project prior to applying for admission.

CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING

Advanced standing of up to 12 credit points may be awarded to candidates who have completed a Master of Education in a relevant area.

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:

1 Demonstrate expert, specialized cognitive technical and research skills in a discipline area in education to independently and systematically generate original knowledge and understanding to make a substantial contribution to a discipline and/or professional practice.
2 Critically reflect on, synthesise and evaluate a substantial and complex body of knowledge at the frontier of a discipline area in education.
3 Communicate research findings, explaining and critiquing theoretical propositions, methodologies, results and conclusions to peers and to the education community.
4 Apply detailed knowledge of research, research integrity, ethics and the rights and safety of others, to plan and execute original researching the field of education with autonomy, authoritative judgement, adaptability and responsibility for personal outputs.

Course Structure

The program for the degree will require successful completion of 192 credit points comprising:

  1. 48 credit points of coursework subjects including:
    1. 24 credit points of research subjects which will provide research preparation for the thesis component of the degree:
      • EDGZ930 Advanced Research Methods in Education
      • EDGZ931 Research Proposal
      • EDGZ932 Advanced Research Seminar
    2. at least 24 credit points selected from the School's postgraduate schedule as listed in the table below.
  2. 144 credit points as a supervised thesis (repeated instances of THES912 or THES924), to be examined externally. This thesis will contribute to two thirds of the total assessment for this award.

Each candidate will be required to select a program of study in consultation with their supervisor(s) and the Head of Postgraduate Studies to ensure that subjects chosen do not duplicate previous graduate work and form a coherent pattern of study.

Candidates will be required to pass all coursework subjects at the first attempt. The coursework component of the program must be completed with an average grade at not less than Credit (65%) level. Students who do not meet this requirement will have their doctoral candidature terminated.
