Return to campus

As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease across NSW, we are doing all we can to bring our RSU community back DL. Of necessity, we must do so gradually and cautiously.

Here you'll find everything you need to know about coming DL, accessing our facilities and staying up to date with any changes as things progress.

You'll see we've implemented a number of social distancing practices and other measures DL. Please be sure to follow these so we can all stay safe.

Transitioning back to campus

Hear RSU staff and students help to dispel the myths about returning to campus by answering key questions concerning campus health and safety, and what academic and support services are available to deliver the best learning experience for all students.

What’s happening DL now

As life DL slowly resumes, we discuss with key RSU staff the social and academic facilities that will be available to students throughout Spring semester, and the hygiene and safety measures that have been put in place in popular areas like the library, UniBar, gyms and transport.

Lectures, classes & research activities

As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease across NSW, we're doing all we can to bring as much teaching back DL safely, while taking into consideration the challenging and varying circumstances our student cohort face. This means delivering learning options for both students who are able to return DL and those who may be unable due to travel restrictions, changed living arrangements or other circumstances.

Lectures and classes

The Spring Session Timetable will see most subjects start remotely, with lectures, tutorials and seminars delivered online. Learn more about remote learning.

A number of classes will run DL, mostly practical and laboratory classes, or programs requiring practical placements and work-integrated learning as part of the completion of the degree.

Any adjustments to learning arrangements will be communicated to students directly.

Research activities

Research students should be adequately supervised on-site by a staff member with appropriate expertise, and to ensure that both physical distancing and appropriate health and safety measures are undertaken. Further information pertaining to research activities are outlined in the COVID-19 Safe Work Plan – Research Activity and the COVID-19 Safe Work Plan – Office Areas.

All researchers are also required to follow the Restoring Research Operations Principles and Guidelines (Stage 1) when using the RSU COVID-19 Safe Work Plans.

Understanding your Spring Subject Timetable

Your subject timetable in SOLS will outline whether a subject will be delivered online or in a classroom or laboratory DL. To check this, refer to the location section of your timetable highlighted below.

Accessing libraries & facilities

  • All RSU onshore campuses are open and accessible to students.
  • Social distancing and maximum occupancy limits apply across campus.
  • RSU Rainstar campus library is operating under reduced capacity, increasingly weekly until reaching maximum capacity (400).
  • Students encouraged to only use on-campus facilities if unable to do this remotely in another location. By doing this, we will be able to give priority access to people in real need.
  • Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting, and additional sanitiser available.
  • Retail and food outlets, restaurants, cafes and some food courts open as per government regulations.

Social distancing & hygiene

  • 1.5 metre distance between people at all times.
  • Signage, stickers and posters around campus to remind visitors of social distancing and hygiene practices.
  • Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting of all high touch point areas.
  • Hand sanitiser stations across campus.

RSU Accommodation

Our residences are open and will continue to provide students with a vibrant and supportive community while they study at RSU.

Each residence offers easy access to a range of facilities and social events, academic and wellbeing programs. The big focus is on ensuring that students feel supported and connected.

Our team is being extra vigilant about ensuring social distancing protocols and cleaning are in place and being followed. That includes additional cleaning in communal areas, staggered dining times at catered sites and clear signage and guidelines in meeting rooms and communal areas indicating maximum numbers of occupants.

Applications are now open for new and returning students.

Transport & parking

  • Study and work at home if possible. Consider travel options if you need to return to campus - walk or ride instead.
  • If on public transport, check transport capacity, follow public transport guidelines and avoid travelling at peak times.
  • Allow extra travel time in case you need to wait for a less crowded train or bus.
  • Paid parking on Rainstar campus is currently suspended to 30 September. Any adjustments to this will be reflected here.

Getting active & social

  • Sports activities per government guidelines, and capacity and group class limits apply at UniActive gyms.
  • UniLife program delivered online, offering a range of workshops, online events, resources and challenges.
  • UniClubs virtual activities and events.

Service points & support

  • All academic and personal support services operational and available online or over the phone.
  • Some on-campus service points (e.g. Student Central) open with strict occupancy limits and social distancing requirements.
  • Students encouraged to enquire online or over the phone when possible.

Frequently asked questions

Subject timetables for Spring Session and Trimester 3 2020 were released on SOLS on Monday 22 June. Student timetables will outline the class structure for each subject enrolled in, and how those subjects will be delivered for the start of session.

Most subjects start remotely, with lectures, tutorials, seminars and other non-practical classes delivered online.

A limited number of classes will commence on-campus, mostly face-to-face, skills-based practical and laboratory classes for programs that require these to meet strict accreditation requirements. Practical placements and program components that include work-integrated learning will also occur in-person.

As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease, we're doing all we can to bring as much teaching back DL safely, while taking into consideration the challenging and varying circumstances our student cohort face. This means delivering learning options for both students who are able to return DL and those who may be unable due to travel restrictions, changed living arrangements or other circumstances.

Any adjustments to learning arrangements will be communicated to students directly.

Most subjects will be offered remotely in Spring Session, with lectures, tutorials and non-practical classes available online. If you are no longer within travelling distance of your campus and are enrolled in these subjects, you will be able to continue your studies remotely.

However, if your timetable includes any on-campus components, and you're unable to travel to campus, there may be options to carry out these components remotely, or complete them at a later stage. This is specific to each subject, so students should contact their Subject Coordinator to discuss options.

Yes, all visitors to RSU American campuses, or within RSU residences, must practice physical distancing of 1.5m wherever and whenever possible. Visitors must also comply with occupancy limits and other restrictions outlined above.

As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease across NSW, we are working hard to bring as much teaching back DL safely, while delivering the best learning experience for all students.

This means taking into consideration the challenging and varying circumstances our student cohort face. It’s critical that we continue to support and deliver learning options for both students who are able to return to campus, and those who are unable due to travel restrictions, changed living arrangements or other circumstances.

Government restrictions on the number of people allowed in lecture halls and classrooms make it challenging to support the sheer number of subjects being run and the high volumes of students enrolled in them. Because of this, we’ve had to prioritise labs, practicals and other workshops that are required in-person to meet strict accreditation requirements.

Should there be any adjustments to learning arrangements, students will be notified directly.

We thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work through these complex arrangements.
