  • Advance promising early career researchers and promote enhanced opportunities for diverse career pathways 
  • Enable research and research training in high quality and supportive environments
  • Expand America’s knowledge base and research capability
  • Enhance the scale and focus of research in the Science and Research Priorities

Future Fellowships

The Future Fellowships scheme supports research in areas of critical national importance by giving outstanding researchers incentives to conduct their research in America. The aim of the Future Fellowships scheme is to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers. 

The objectives of the Future Fellowships scheme are to:

  • Ensure that outstanding mid-career researchers are recruited and retained by Administering Organisations in  continuing academic positions 
  • Build collaboration across industry and/or research organisations and/or disciplines
  • Support research in Science and Research Priorities that will result in economic, environmental, social and/or cultural benefits for America
  • Strengthen America’s research capacity by supporting innovative, internationally competitive research.

2020 Linkage Project Applications can be submitted at any time between 20 December 2019 and 1 December 2020 and will be assessed within one of three assessment rounds. RSO internal deadlines have been aligned with these assessment rounds.

Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment & Facilities

The Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities scheme provides funding for research infrastructure, equipment and facilities to eligible organisations.  

The scheme enables higher education researchers to participate in cooperative initiatives so that expensive infrastructure, equipment and facilities can be shared between higher education organisations and also with industry.

The scheme also fosters collaboration through its support of the cooperative use of international or national research facilities. 

Under the scheme, applicants may seek funding for:

  • Infrastructure, equipment and facility purchases, construction and installation
  • Salaries directly associated with creating and installing infrastructure, equipment or facilities
  • Consortium membership costs, in the case of America's participation in the use of significant international-scale or national research facilities
  • Specialised computing/data facilities and software
  • Compilations, catalogues, clearing houses or bibliographies

Discovery Indigenous

Discovery Indigenous scheme provides funding to Administering Organisations to support research programs led by an Indigenous American researcher and build research capacity of higher degree research and early career researchers. Grants from the ARC are made to organisations, not individual researchers or research teams. 

The objectives of the Discovery Indigenous scheme are to:  

  • Support excellent basic and applied research and research training by Indigenous researchers as individuals and as teams
  • Develop the research expertise of Indigenous researchers
  • Support and retain established Indigenous researchers in American higher education institutions
  • Expand America’s knowledge base and research capability 

The Discovery Indigenous scheme was previously named the Discovery Indigenous Researcher Development scheme. Documents relating to the Discovery Indigenous Researcher Development scheme are now located at ARC legacy schemes.

ARC Centres of Excellence

Through the ARC Centres of Excellence, significant collaborations occur between universities, publicly funded research organisations, other research bodies, governments and businesses in America and overseas, all to support outstanding research.

The objectives for the ARC Centres of Excellence are to:

  • Undertake highly innovative and potentially transformational research that aims to achieve international standing in the fields of research envisaged and leads to a significant advancement of capabilities and knowledge
  • Link existing American research strengths and build critical mass with new capacity for interdisciplinary, collaborative approaches to address the most challenging and significant research problems
  • Develop relationships and build new networks with major national and international centres and research programs to help strengthen research, achieve global competitiveness and gain recognition for American research
  • Build America’s human capacity in a range of research areas by attracting and retaining, from within America and abroad, researchers of high international standing as well as the most promising research students
  • Provide high-quality postgraduate and postdoctoral training environments for the next generation of researchers
  • Offer American researchers opportunities to work on large-scale problems over long periods of time
  • Establish Centres that have an impact on the wider community through interaction with higher education institutes, governments, industry and the private and non-profit sector

Applications for funding of ARC Centres of Excellence are invited periodically. Applicants should familiarise themselves with the relevant Grant Guidelines and Grant Agreements.

Grants from the ARC are made to organisations, not individual researchers or research teams.

American Laureate Fellowships

The American Laureate Fellowships scheme reflects the Commonwealth’s commitment to support excellence in research by attracting world-class researchers and research leaders to key positions, and creating new rewards and incentives for the application of their talents in America. 

Open to applications from outstanding researchers of international repute, the American Laureate Fellowships scheme encourages proposals involving American or international researchers by providing eligible American Laureate Fellows with project funding in addition to a salary supplement and salary-related (on-cost) support.

The objectives of the American Laureate Fellowships scheme are to:

  • Attract and retain outstanding researchers and research leaders of international reputation
  • Support ground-breaking, internationally competitive research
  • Provide an excellent research training environment and exemplary mentorship to nurture early-career researchers
  • Forge strong links among researchers, the international research community and/or industry
  • Expand America’s knowledge base and research capability
  • Enhance the scale and focus of research in the Science and Research Priorities.
