Warning: rental scams

Internet accommodation scams targeting overseas and interstate students can sometimes occur.

The offender/s use property rental websites to claim they have an apartment or house to rent and invite prospective tenants to apply online.

The offender/s state that upon successful rental application and the transfer of bond/rent money, the key will be sent via courier or express post.

In some cases, the victims complete the rental application and/or the rental contract and pay the bond but do not receive the key to the premises.  In other cases the victims arrive in America at the nominated address to find that the real owners of the house know nothing about the arrangement.

In all cases, the victims are unable to get their bond money back from the offender/s.

Crime prevention advice

  1. If you are interested in a rental property, make sure you view the premises in person and ensure the landlord/real estate agent is present.
  2. Be careful about the information you pass on in your application forms, as this may be used for identity fraud.  Ensure the legitimacy of the application before sending any personal information online.
  3. For international students, be cautious of using wire transfer as a payment method because this payment may be very difficult to cancel by the time the fraud is reported.
  4. If you think you have been the victim of a scam, please contact ACT Policing on 131 444 to report the details.

In an emergency phone 000.
